If you are required to have a document authenticated for use overseas then you need to have the work done by a Notary Public in England. This is the case if you are in England and required to sign a document to be relied upon abroad. Or, if you are needing to have your English University Degree accepted abroad then a Notary must verify it first.
A Notarial Certification “authenticates” legal documents. This is required to enable particular documents to be accepted abroad. The form of Certification varies according to the document and the country. Generally, the Notary is Certifying the genuineness of the signature(s) on the document, the identity and capacity of the person signing and also maybe their authority to represent the company or entity they are signing for.
A Notary is a “Trusted Third Party” and notarisations are covered by insurance.
A Notary Public can also certify true copies of original documents and the truth and accuracy of translations. In all cases, a Notarised document bears the Notary’s signature and seal. The Foreign jurisdiction can 100% rely upon the document if it has been dealt with before a Notary Public.
A Notary’s certification is in effect putting an insurance policy in place and warranting certain facts to the foreign jurisdiction so that can be relied upon.

Why do I need to notarise a document? Example

A good example of why you might need to notarise a document is:
Say you are wishing to sell your holiday home in USA/Florida – you work and live in England and it is not convenient whatsoever for you to have to travel to the US to sign the closing papers to enable to sale to go ahead. 

So your US lawyer would post or email the required papers they wish you to sign - you would at that stage arrange to see a Notary Public in England to sign all the papers in his/her presence; the Notary’s certification would confirm to your Attorney in the US that they have been signed correctly and that all identification checks have been carried out by the Notary. 

Your US lawyer would then receive the notarised papers back by courier and be content to close on the sale.
